Austro-Deimier for sale
Based in Wiener Neustadt, Austro-Daimler was one of the leading Austrian automakers in the first part of the 20th century. As an official subsidiary of the German-based Daimler Motor Company, it is credited with being part of the first multinational auto company in history. It also boasts being the maker of the first armored vehicle and with being one of the first companies to employ the legendary auto designer, Ferdinand Porche.Eduard Bierenz and Eduard Fischer founded the company in 1899. Daimler first began selling its cars in Austria, then decided to manufacture them there. In 1900, they introduced a 2-cylinder automobile with four seats and began making engines and parts as well. In 1902, Paul Daimler, the son of Daimler founder Gottlieb Daimler, joined the company and spearheaded the building of the first armored vehicle, a 4x4 four wheel drive metal-covered contraption made for the Austrian Army.
After only a brief stint, Daimler returned to Stuttgart and the company recruited Ferdinand Porsche, an engineering genius who had previously pioneered the use of aerodynamics with his famous racecars Mixte and Maya. Porsche led development of the Zeppelin engines at Austro-Daimler. He also led Austro-Daimler's drive to break from DMG in 1909.
In 1911, Porsche designed and Austro-Daimler produced the 4-cylinder Prinz Heinrich, named after the Austrian monarch, which was an instant success. A smaller version was also offered.
World War I saw the transformation of Austro-Daimler from an automaker to a producer of military engines, vehicles and equipment. The work force swelled from a pre-war 800 employees to some 4,500. Following the war, Austro-Daimler returned to making automobiles, but began a series of mergers with other companies that ultimately led to its financial demise.
About this time, Porsche designed the Sascha racing cars named after the Czech film mogul and financial backer Count Sascha Kolowrat-Krakowski. It was lightweight, but packed 50 hp, which was powerful for the time. Saschas did very well in races in Italy and received widespread acclaim.
Porsche left the financial troubles of Austro-Daimler behind and returned to Stuttgart, Germany to DMG. Austro-Daimler went on to produce several cars in the early 1930s, including the 6-cylinder ADM, considered one of the greatest automobiles of the decade. There was also the Bermeister, a 6-cylinder with a top speed of 90 mph.
The 30s automobiles would be the last of the great Austro-Daimlers. The company merged with Steyr Automobile in 1934, creating the massive Steyr-Daimler-Puch conglomerate, which lasted up until 2001.
