Blackhawk for sale
In an era where everything old is new again, the Buick Blackhawk is a testament to everything that was and still is good about the American automobile. Released by Buick in 2001, it has already reached high collectible status, taking in more than $500,000 at a 2009 auction in Arizona. The idea for the retro concept car came from Michael Doble, the special vehicles manager at Buick. He says in terms of customized cars, the Blackhawk is the ultimate expression of Buick, emphasizing its long heritage of distinctive design and outstanding power.
The Blackhawk is a four-seat convertible with a retractable top and a streamlined body reminiscent of the 1941 and 1948 Roadmasters. The front end features a classic 1939 grille with straight lines that peak at the center. The body has sleek black cherry paint, no door handles and hidden headlights.
Very subtly on the side panels of the Blackhawk, one can detect a slightly different shade of dark cherry paint that sweeps horizontally and then downward along the doors toward the base of the rear fender, then kicks up over the rear wheel openings. This is called a "sweepspear," something that first showed up in the '49 Roadmasters.
All hand built from outside in, the Blackhawk features a 1970 Buick GS Stage III V-8 engine, matched with a modern electronically controlled four-speed transmission. It generates 463 hp at 4600 rpm. The performance goal for the Buick Blackhawk is 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds.
While Doble spearheaded the project, the actual design was created by Steven D. Pasteiner, a former Buick designer who now owns Advanced Automobile Technologies, a design and prototype company based in Michigan. Both Doble and Pasteiner maintain they were looking to create a car that blended the best of the Buick history with contemporary technology.
According to Doble and Pasteiner, the Blackhawk name was derived from Buick's subcompact Skyhawk of 1975. Its hawk symbol was a Buick icon through the 1980s and serves as the hood ornament on the new Blackhawk. Interestingly, another luxury car made by the Stutz Motor Company of Indianapolis, Indiana also bore the Blackhawk name although it's not clear if the two are connected.
So far, only one of the Buick Blackhawk concept cars has apparently been produced. The car was driven by actor Will Smith in the film "Bad Boys II" and was sold for $522,000 at an auction in 2009. Like any single object of value, its price is likely to increase over time.
