Brough Superior for sale
Brough Superior was a Nottingham, England-based motor company that lasted from 1919 to 1940. It was best known for its extremely high-quality and limited-edition motorcycles, and today, most of its products, from motorcycles to cars, are just as desirable as they ever were. In 2010, a 1926 Brough Superior SS100 Motorcycle sold at auction for a record $448,155.The founder, George Brough, was indeed focused on making a superior product and no two motorcycles had the same configuration. All motorcycles were assembled twice. All parts were fitted together, then taken apart and painted, and finally put together once more. Each motorcycle was also test driven prior to delivery to check on performance. If performance standards were not met, the vehicle would go back to the drawing board. With all this fuss, it was no wonder Brough Superior Motorcycles were expensive, at 130 to 180 pounds in the 1920s and 1930s. That was 60 times the average weekly salary!
Major production models for the Brough Superior motorcycle line include the SS100, the SS80, the SS680 and the 11.50. Racing motorcycle models included the Golden Dream and the Straight Four Combination.
In terms of quality and rarity, Brough Superior automobiles seem even more extreme. George Brough only made 85 cars named Brough Superior, built between 1935 and 1939. There were only three models. They consisted of a 4-litre model with a straight-eight engine, a 3.5-litre model with a straight-six engine, and the XII made in 1938 with a Lincoln-Zephyr V12. Only one of the latter models was made, and it reportedly still exists.
Brough-Superior ceased production of all automobiles and motorcycles during World War II and never resumed afterwards. George Brough continued to service vehicles until 1969.
Famous people who owned Brough-Superior products included the playwright George Bernard Shaw and the famous British army officer T. E. Lawrence, whose life was the basis for the 1962 film, Lawrence of Arabia. Lawrence owned seven motorcycles and died when he crashed one of them.
Only about 1,000 Brough-Superior motorcycles are known to still exist. The number of automobiles still in existence can probably be counted on one hand.
