Bucciali for sale

Bucciali was an automobile manufactured in France from 1922 to 1933 by brothers Albert "Buc" and Angelo Bucciali. While its history is fairly short-lived compared to other automakers of the time, its story is fascinating - it's about how one man's talent and ambition drove him to new heights.

The Bucciali brothers' father was the blind composer, Joseph Bucciali. As young children, they were taught not just to play the piano, but to take it apart and repair it as well. In 1902, Albert witnessed an automobile race, which sparked a lifelong interest in all things mechanical. Four years later, he entered the race in a vehicle that he constructed himself.

After college, Albert then decides to build his own airplane, which he dubs the "Buc," and learns to fly it. And when that is not enough, he goes to flight school to learn aerobatics flight techniques. Next, he enters the French Air Force and becomes a fighter pilot in WWI, impressing everyone with his unorthodox maneuvers.

By the time Albert Bucciali returned from the war, he had enough money to open a car manufacturing business, which he did along with his brother Angelo, who became the riding mechanic. They released their first car in 1922, a two-stroke V4 cycle car named "Buc." The first orders were taken at the Paris auto show, where the car produced a buzz. As it turned out, production was slow, but buyers were patient, obviously feeling that good things must take time.

In 1926, the brothers decided to refocus the company's efforts to engineering. At this time, Albert unveiled his new front-wheel drive configuration called the Bucciali TAV, or Traction Avant. But despite heavy marketing of the new system -- and even on a trip to America -- only one order came in, and that was at the 1930 Paris Motor Show. Georges Roure. Even this proved troublesome, with numerous production delays and changes by Roure. In the end, though, the front-engine Bucciali was fitted with a four-door saloon body by Saoutchik that features an elongated stork on the side, symbolizing Albert Bucciali's squadron in the war.

A contract with Peerless to make cars with the Bucciali patented front wheel drive was a short-lived success, as was the financial backing from Albert's wife and then a private financier. Eventually, production troubles and a lack of sales gave way to the Great Depression, and Bucciali Brothers was forced to close in 1932.

Albert Bucciali went on to design a series of military vehicles, but never got the recognition he deserved for his mechanical genius. He passed away in 1981. Georges Roure's Bucciali, meantime, has changed hands only a couple of times, and is now believed to be in the possession of a Swiss collector.
