De Tomaso for sale

The De Tomaso car was founded by former racer Alejandro de Tomaso. De Tomaso classics for sale were powerful, good-looking cars that used Ford engines.

The first model to be manufactured by De Tomaso was the Vallelunga, a two-seater with a four-cylinder Ford engine. By the mid-1960s, De Tomaso had come to an agreement with Ford to use their larger V-8 engines. The Vallelunga also had an aluminum backbone chassis and fiberglass bodywork.

The Mangusta was designed by Girgetto Giugiaro, who also designed cars for Maserati. Nicknamed the “Goose,” it rivaled the Lamborghini, but much cheaper. However, the car did not always handle well at top speeds due to structural issues.

De Tomaso is best known for the Pantera, which sold relatively well in the 1970s. When new, they sold for about $10,000 through Ford’s Lincoln Mercury dealerships. The Pantera was designed by Tom Tjaarda, who also designed cars for Ferrari and Mercedes. The Pantera came with leather interior, electric windows, and magnesium wheels. It was as wide as a Corvette but several inches closer to the ground. Many Pantera classics for sale have been modified with more modern hardware to make them go faster and drive better. The 1970s brought changes that did not bode well for De Tomaso. Emissions were being regulated, bumper standards were becoming stricter, and gas prices were rising. With less demand, the last Panteras were hand-built and came with a 5.0-liter Ford V-engine and a six-speed transmission. After 1975, about 200 cars were produced per year.

In addition to their sports cars, De Tomaso also built luxury vehicles in the 1970s and 1980s. The Deauville featured the same engine as the Pantera, but mounted in the front. The idea was to compete with Jaguar and Mercedes, however it was not built with the same level of quality. The next attempt was the Longchamp, which took the mechanics of the Deauville into a flatter, more rectangular shape. These classics for sale are true rarities only about 400 were produced.

In 1993 the Pantera was replaced by the Guara, the last model to be produced by De Tomaso. The Guara used Ford and BMW parts. The last De Tomaso classics for sale were produced in the early 2000s. De Tomaso had planned to introduce other models at this time, but these plans were abandoned and the company was liquidated. The Longchamp model is a rarity. Only 400 Longchamp classics for sale were made.
