The DeLorean DMC-12 is the iconic car that served as a time macchine in the movie Back to the Future. These classics for sale are most often known as simply DeLorean, after John DeLorean, the founder and a former manager at General Motors. The company was established in Detroit in the 1970s. DeLorean had wanted to design a futuristic sports car with a roomy interior. He was a tall man, and felt that the smaller sports cars of the time were difficult for larger people.Perhaps to ease such difficulties, the DeLorean’s most notable feature is the gullwing doors that open up rather than from the side. These doors require very little clearance and are able to open easily in tight spaces. The body was made of unpainted stainless steel. The purpose of this was to avoid rust and corrosion, but instead it picked up every fingerprint and piece of dirt. It had a rear-mounted engine with a heavy tail end that did not always handle well and was underpowered. Although interest in the DeLorean was high in countries that required right-side steering wheels, very few of these customized versions were produced.
DeLorean sought funding from several banks and private companies. With a loan from the British government he had built an assembly factory in Northern Ireland by the late 1970s. The DeLorean project, however, was delayed until the 1980s. The cars were produced from 1981 – 1983, and initially sold quickly, but DeLorean soon ran out of funding. There were political issues at the plant in Ireland, turnover among executives at the company, and DeLorean himself faced personal problems – he was accused of drug trafficking. He was found not guilty, but still critics said he was involved in too many projects and did not devote enough time to ensure the success of the DMC-12. The company went bankrupt in 1982.
Over the past twenty years, DeLorean classics for sale have become a collector’s item. Many original owners choose to keep their cars, and several companies devoted to restoring them have been started. The stainless steel body creates unique challenges for restoration as filler cannot be hidden with paint and damaged panels often have to be replaced.
