The Detroit Industrial Vehicle Company, or Divco, produced multi-stop delivery trucks from 1926 until 1986. The first Divco was a milktruck created by George Bacon, an engineer at the Detroit Electric Car Company. Prototypes were tested with the Detroit Creamery. The truck could be driven from the front, back, or running boards on either side. The battery-powered vehicle could not withstand the heavy load or long days necessary for delivery items straight to consumers, and the company was not interested in manufacturing gasoline-powered vehicles, so Bacon went off to begin the Divco company with other investors. His idea paid off as Divcos became a part of neighborhoods across America. Many people remember waking up to Divco classics for sale delivering their milk every morning.

The first Divcos were van-like vehicles with a four-cylinder engine and a four-speed transmission. These multi-stop vehicles required heavier brakes and other systems than typical vehicles. The Model G classics for sale offered open-sided vehicles. The Model H featured a dropped aisle to walk through to the cargo section.

As the Depression weathered on, Divco went through several mergers and acquisitions. In the later 1930s, Divco classics for sale were completely redesigned from flat-front to snub-nosed models. They had semi-automatic folding doors. The engine, however, was the same four-cylinder that Divco had started with.

The first refrigerated unit was built in 1940. During World War II, the plant suspended production to produce materials for the war effort. After the war, production doubled, and by the 1950s, the refrigerated vans were regular options. Around this time the company began using six-cylinder engines, and diesel engines were optional. The company shifted its focus to forward control vehicles to expand their base into various delivery markets. After purchasing Wayne Works, a school bus company, the trucks were modified to produce a bus with seats and windows. Known as the Dividend, very few of these classics for sale were produced. The Dividend bus was discontinued after just a couple of years.

The 1960s saw another period of mergers and acquisitions for Divco. Eventually a company called Correct Manufacturing bought the company. At this point, Divco production decreased. The Correct company soon faced liability issues with their truck beds and crane products and went bankrupt in 1985. The last Divcos were produced and the dealerships disappeared. There is a growing interest in collecting and restoring Divco classics for sale.
