du Pont for sale

Over the years, the American DuPont Corporation has come to be known for selling household products and agricultural supplies. But what most people don't know is that the company also manufactured and sold automobiles for a brief time, from roughly 1919 until the division went bankrupt in 1932.

Industrialist E. Paul du Pont founded Du Pont Motors in Moore, Pennsylvania in 1919, primarily to make marine engines for the Allied war effort. But after the war, the company turned to making luxury automobiles, and in 1919, Du Pont Motors released its first car, the Model A, at the 1919 International Salon in New York. The event was not open to the public but to a group of private, wealthy customers, thus establishing the Du Pont as the car of choice for the privileged.

The Model A was followed by the Model B (1920 - 1924), the Model C (1923), the Model D (1923) the Model E (1927) and the Model F (1927). All of these were four-and-six cylinder automobiles. The Model G, introduced in 1928, had an 8-cylinder engine and was available in phaeton, coupe, sedan, Victoria, limousine, sport and convertible styles. They were elegant and ultra-luxurious and sported coachwork by Merrimac, Derham and Waterhouse. Prices were extraordinarily expensive, topping $6,000 in some cases.

The Model G was considered the most successful Du Pont ever built, with some 273 built. Prominent customers included Will Rogers, Jack Dempsey and Peter Helck. Mary Pickford purchased a speedster model for her husband Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

Even though production of these exclusive cars was very limited, a few Du Pont vehicles entered races. One entered the LeMans but was forced to drop out early, and something similar happened with a Du Pont in the 1930 Indianapolis 500, when it dropped out after running into the wall at the 22nd lap.

The last Du Pont vehicle produced, the Model H, was unveiled in 1930. Only three of them were made, including one dubbed the "Most Elegant Open Car."

Even with the Du Pont fortune behind it and the world's wealthiest clientele, Du Pont Motors could not survive the firm grip of The Great Depression. Production ceased in 1931, with a grand total of around 500 automobiles produced in a little over a decade. E. Paul Du Pont then purchased the Indian Motorcycle Company in 1932 and merged the two companies, but automobile production never resumed. Very rare to this day, a Du Pont automobile fetches a pretty penny at auction.
