Excalibur for sale
The Excalibur classics for sale were initially intended for Studebaker. The Excalibur was first seen at an auto show in 1963. It was a roadster style car that imitated the 1928 Mercedes SS. The first cars were built on a Studebaker chassis and had 290 horsepower Studebaker V8 engine. Brooks Stevens, the designer of the cars, went off to form his own company to build the Excalibur.Excalibur classics for sale were built in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The cars were built slowly with individualized attention. To the extent possible, the company tried to manufacture their own parts. They decided to use a 300-horsepower Chevrolet V8 engine. The body panels were made from glass fiber instead of aluminum. By 1966 the company introduced two new models in addition to the two-seat roadster. One was an elongated roadster and the other was a convertible four-seater called the Phaeton. In 1969, production reached 100 units a year.
There were several imitators of the Excalibur because the company’s limited production model could not keep up. Rather than compromise the build quality, they introduced the Excalibur Series II, which used a suspension system and four-disc brakes borrowed from the Corvette. It came in three- or four-speed transmission. The price nearly doubled, but came with lots of extras like air conditioning, power steering, chrome wheels, stereo, and two spare tires mounted on the front fenders. The top spoeed was nearly 150 miles per hour. The Series I are the rarest of all Excalibur classics for sale. Through the 1970s other changes were made, including a new chassis, a stretched wheelbase, and a truck engine.
In 1980 the Series IV was launched. This was the first Excalibur to have glass side windows, a trunk, and an electronic soft top. At this point the company was not turning enough of a profit. Their strategy was to load the car with extras like electric windows, power seats and locks, and cruise control to justify increasing the price. A special edition was produced for the company’s 20th birthday. These were white and gray with a chrome strip and featured a plaque with Stevens’ signature. The Series V, launched in 1985, was even more luxurious.
Many famous people have owned Excaliburs, including Jackie Gleason, Dick van Dyke, Sonny and Cher, George Foreman, Rod Stewart and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Excaliburs have depreciated less than other classics for sale. Most of those built are still on the road.
