Executive for sale
The Executive classics for sale, released in 1956, were the last models produced by Packard. The company had merged with Studebaker two years earlier and intended to use the name exclusively for luxury cars. Less than 3,000 were built. The Packard Executive was considered well-built and moderately priced. It was marketed toward young men on their way up the corporate ladder who wanted a luxury automobile but may not have been able to afford a typical Packard. It was a mid-priced model that came as a four-door sedan or a two-door hardtop. Executive classics for sale were intended to compete with Buick and Chrysler. The cars featured a Packard grille and front panels. The tail end and interior were based on the Clipper, another make owned by Studebaker-Packard. The cars did feature special trim on the side panels that was similar to high-end Packards. However, unlike other 1956 Packards, the Executive had a Clipper engine and a Clipper chassis. Therefore it was smaller and less horsepower than a typical Packard, and the company referred to it as a “junior” model. This was in opposition to what management had been trying to do for years, that is, maintaining Packard as a luxury vehicle separate from the Clipper line. This was perhaps due to complaints from dealers that people weren’t buying Clippers because they didn’t come with the prestige of a Packard.
The Executive sold quickly at first, but the company was already facing financial troubles. The builder of the Executive bodies, a company called Henney, was also troubled financially as well, which impacted the supply. Despite rumors that 1956 would be the last year for Packard, the Executive featured advances like Twin Ultramatic pushbutton transmission and a very powerful V8 engine. Options included power steering, brakes, windows and seats. Most Executive classics for sale had two-tone paint jobs and showy upholstery. They were even offered in a new color, flamingo, usually tow-toned with white. Packard management tried everything it could to make consumers happy. They would even make cars with non-standard specifications like three-speed stick shifts. However, potential customers appeared to be worried by the negative press. If the line was discontinued they might no longer be able to find parts or resell their vehicles for a reasonable price.
The last Packards were produced in Detroit in 1956. The company was severely in debt and forced to close its factories.
