Farman for sale

At the dawn of the 20th century businesses of all types tried their hand at manufacturing the newest four-wheeled sensation, the automobile. Many converted from making horse drawn carriages or bicycles. The Farman brothers of France, however, had been pioneers in the field of aviation and making automobiles was a natural course for them.

The Farmans had come from a wealthy family in Paris -- their father was a successful journalist -- and they had the money to break into the aircraft industry from the beginning. Henri Farman purchased France’s first manned airplane from Gabriel Voisin in 1907 and began setting records for distance and duration, including becoming the first person to fly cross-country in Europe. Henri Farman and his brothers Richard, Henri and Maurice went on to build a very successful aircraft manufacturing business themselves, supplying thousands of planes for the war effort in World War I and eventually building the world’s first long-distance passenger airliner, the Goliath, in 1919.

Not to rest on their laurels, the Farman brothers entered the car business that same year with their first model, the A6, unveiled at the Paris Salon. It had a six-cylinder engine, a 4-speed transmission and an abundance of high-grade aluminum -- in essence, it borrowed much from the airplane. The Farman was to be “an automobile absolutely perfect in every way” and apparently that appealed to the rich and famous, as film star Pearl White, the Shah of Persia and the Sultan of Morocco were among the exclusive owners of Farman automobiles. Many of the Farman coaches were purchased from high-end coachbuilders, so the end result was that no two Farmans were alike, except for the radiator and the mascot, a winged effigy with the initial “F.” Their unique aspects and quality construction caused them to be very expensive.

In 1921, the A6 was upgraded to the A6B, which had power assisted brakes on all four wheels. The NF model was launched in 1927.

As with many automobile manufacturers of the early 1900s, Farman fell by the wayside around the time of the Great Depression because of a diminishing market and rising costs. Farman shut down its automotive division in 1931, but continued with aviation for many years. In all, the company had only built about 120 automobiles and today only four are known to exist, two of those in a museum in Mulhouse, France, the others in private ownership.
