Freightliner for sale
The Freightliner truck company was founded by Leland James in 1942. Initially developed by Consolidated Freightways to climb steep upgrades that most heavy trucks weren’t powerful enough to make, the trucks were branded as Freightliners early on. Freightliner classics for sale are best known for their heavy duty diesel trucks. The first Freightliner classics for sale hit the road in the early 1940s. In 1947, Freightliner opened their manufacturing facility in Portland, Oregon. They made 30 trucks in their first year.
Like many other vehicle manufacturers, the company shut down its factories during World War II. When production resumed, the first truck was sold to the Hyster Company, a forklift manufacturer. This early Freightliner is now a fixture in the Smithsonian Institution. In the 1950s, the trucks began distribution through the White Motor Company. This relationship was terminated in the 1970s, when the White Company encountered financial difficulties.
In the 1960s, freightliner introduced unique designs like the half-cab built for mixers. Annual sales hit 1,000 units. The company also built an ultra-modern production facility, still in Portland, Oregon.
The company introduced the Powerliner classics for sale in 1973. The trucks could now accommodate a 500 horsepower engine. The same year, a 96-inch cab-over was launched. Full production of the first conventional truck completely designed by Freightliner began in 1974. The 100,000th Freightliner was produced that same year. The 1980s saw innovations in aerodynamics and a sleeper cab.
In the 1990s Freightliner introduced their medium-duty business class trucks. Throughout the 1990s the Freightliner business grew by acquiring new brands such as Thomas, Sterling, and Western Star.
These days Freightliners come with clutchless manual transmissions and automatic grade-sensing gear changing. These features make it easier than ever to haul a load of up to 100,000 pounds. For the driver’s comfort, Freightliners are equipped with climate control and noise insulation. Sleeper cabs include cooking facilities. The company continues to innovate and has an advanced wind tunnel testing facility, also in Portland, Oregon.
Freightliner is the largest heavy duty truck manufacturer in North America. Its contemporary classics for sale include Peterbilt and Mack trucks. It is now a subsidiary of Daimler, which acquired Freightliner from Consolidated Freightways in 1981. The company remains active in manufacturing heavy duty trucks and commercial vehicles. It is also a leader in the school bus market.
