Hummer for sale
The Hummer was born when the American military needed a general-purpose vehicle to transport troops and equipment to the battlefield. AM General Corporation (AMG), a company that had once produced Jeep vehicles for the military, won the contract to produce these classics for sale. The military named the vehicle High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HMMWV, but soldiers who found the acronym cumbersome quickly nicknamed the vehicles Humvees. The vehicle was officially named the Hummer by AMG. The trucks were 15 feet long, 7 feet wide, and weighed over 5,000 pounds. The tires alone were three feet tall. They had a 150-horsepower V8 engine that could pull a freight train and reach up to 60 miles per hour.
While civilians may not be able to detect the differences, over 20 models have been developed for specific military purposes. The M998 is most commonly used to transport troops and supplies. In 1992 AMG began selling a civilian version of this model. This was due in part to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who encountered the Hummer while filming a movie. Schwarzenegger owns several of these classics for sale himself. In 1990 ESPN broadcast the highlights of two Hummers being driven across the Soviet Union’s rough terrain. The Hummer also received lots of attention from its use in the Gulf War.
The Hummer brand was purchased by General Motors in 1998. These classics for sale continued to be produced by AMG, but GM was in charge of marketing and distribution. The Hummer H1 is a civilian vehicle can be used off-road. The H2 is a large truck that seats six people. The H3 is a midsize sport utility vehicle or pickup truck. The Hummer HX was a concept car developed in 2008. It was a smaller, open-air version with two doors.
Hummers have shown to be useful in disaster situations as well as wars, and in cooperation with GM and the Red Cross, Hummer Owners Prepared for Emergencies (HOPE) was formed to train Hummer owners in first aid skills.
In the late 2000s, demand for large sport utility vehicles decreased because of higher oil prices and the recession. Hummers have been criticized for many reasons, including the difficulty parking and navigating narrow streets, the environment, and fuel economy. The vehicles also lack safety features common to other modern passenger cars and trucks. Attempts by General Motors to sell the brand failed, and the Hummer was discontinued in 2010. Hummer classics for sale are still widely available.
