Isotta-Fraschini for sale
Cesare Isotta and Vincenzo Fraschini, former assemblers for Renault, started the Isotta-Fraschini company in Italy in 1904. The first Isotta-Fraschini classics for sale had a 24-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The car was driven in races by Fraschini himself. In 1905, the company entered the Coppa Florio race with their Tipo D 100-horsepower engine. The early days of racing sealed the company’s reputation. They were one of the first cars to use four-wheel disc brakes, and one of the first European cars with a V8. The Tipo 8 had the world’s first mass-produced inline eight-cylinder engine. The engine capacity continued to grow throughout the 1900s and was guaranteed to reach 90 miles per hour.Isotta Fraschini’s deluxe limousines were marketed to wealthy Americans during the 1920s. Rolls Royce was the only foreign luxury company to outsell them. The cars appeared in films like Sunset Boulevard. The cars were considered to be Italy’s answer to the Duesenberg. These classics for sale were custom built. The powertrain and chassis were bought from the Isotta Fraschini company, and sent to a builder chosen by the customer. With so many model variations, no two are alike. Most were larger sedans but sportier versions were also created. Isotta Fraschini classics for sale were well-built and offered a smooth ride. The cars were also a status symbol. Only those with taste and money could afford them, and each one was unique. It is said that celebrities and royalty waited in line to have their own personal version. Pope Pius XI, Benito Mussolini, William Randolph Hearst, Jack Dempsey, and Rudolph Valentino owned Isotta Fraschini cars. They were sold in sophisticated places like London, New York, Buenos Aires, and Brussels.
Not surprisingly, Isotta Fraschini was severely impacted by the Great Depression. The public was no longer interested in new luxury cars, no matter how stylish, unique or innovative. Car production ceased in 1935 while the company manufactured trucks and engines for boats and aircraft to stay afloat, but they did not survive after World War II. Henry Ford had wanted to buy the company, but the Italian governemtn wouldn’t allow it. The last model produced was the Monterosa, in 1949. It was twice as expensive as a Cadillac or Packard. Only about five of these classics for sale were manufactured. Today they can sell for up to $2 million. The Isotta-Fraschini company still exists as a purveyor of luxury good like leather and perfumes.
