Jeep for sale
Jeep vehicles were developed for use as military vehicles during wartime. The Army had been looking for a quick, light vehicle that could navigate all types of terrain. This became more urgent in 1940 with the onset of World War II. The Army put out a request for such a vehicle, and the first Jeep was built by hand in just several weeks. The Army put the vehicle through rigorous testing. These classics for sale were manufactured by the Willys-Overland and Ford companies. No one is really sure how the Jeep got its name. The most popular theory is that it came from the acronym GP for General Purpose vehicle. These military vehicles were the predecessors for today’s Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee classics for sale.
The Willys company recognized early on that the Jeep would be popular with civilians as well, and even before the war had ended, these classics for sale were featured in advertising at home. The campaigns generally promoted the versatility of the Jeep.
The first Jeep was produced for civilians in 1945. Named the CJ-2A, it was sold as a work vehicle for farmers and construction companies. It came equipped with features that the military vehicles did not, like a tailgate and a spare tire.
The economical and powerful Hurricane engine was introduced in the 1950s. The Wagoneer offered the first automatic transmission on a four-wheel drive vehicle. In the 1970s, production of Jeep vehicles tripled. Four-wheel drive, once reserved for work vehicles, was just becoming popular in family vehicles as well. In the late 1970s, the Humvee was developed by American General, and this would soon overtake Jeep in use by the military.
The Jeep Cherokee was more compact than previous models and was well-received by industry publications. It was offered in several interior and exterior styling and performance packages. Many revisions and improvements were made to the Cherokee, but the model basically stayed the same until 1997, when it was redesigned along with the Jeep Wrangler. Today the Wrangler is one of the few remaining four-wheel-drive vehicles with solid front and rear axles known for their durability and strength.
In the 1990s Jeep began producing a right-hand drive version of the vehicle which could be exported to markets like Great Britain, Australia, and Japan.
Jeep was originally owned by Willys-Overland and since then has passed from them to Kaiser, American Motors, and Chrysler. The tagline for Jeep classics for sale is Go Anywhere, Do Anything.
