Jensen-Healey for sale
Jensen-Healey classics for sale were produced from 1972 to 1976. About 10,000 of these two-seat convertibles were produced in England. The idea began with a car dealer named Kjell Qvale, who had had done good business selling Austin-Healey cars. When the Austin-Healeys were discontinued, he needed something to replace them and keep his business going. He turned to Jensen Motors, the company that build Austin-Healey cars, and Donald Healey, who would lend the cars their style. With their collaboration, Qvale invested himself in a new venture. After much debate, the company decided on a Lotus 907 engine, and all Jensen-Healy classics for sale were equipped with them. There was some variation in other parts depending on what country the cars were meant for. The suspension, steering, brakes and axle were borrowed from the Vauxhall Firenza. The interior was functional and typically all black. Later customers would be able to get wood grain, padding, and air conditioning. In 1976 they would even offer paisley-patterned seats. The cars had a grille-less look with a sloping engine hood and headlamp shells. It was several inches longer than the Austin-Healey it replaced. While the car handled well, build quality was not as strong and there were issues with rust and the undeveloped new engine. The exterior was plain but seemed to be well-received. Rubber bumpers were added to meet United States regulation.
The company had plenty of orders coming in prior to 1974, but these began to dry up and Jensen Motors was hit hard by the oil crisis. Sales of their large V8 Interceptor model plummeted, impacting the whole company. To counter this, the Jensen GT classics for sale were rushed to market, but this was costly to do and sales were mediocre at best. While the car had many interesting features like dials and switches, electric windows and tiny rear seats, it cost much more money than consumers were willing to spend. Another disadvantage was that the car’s added weight reduced acceleration. During this time the company was facing a strike, a shortage of parts, and inflation as well. Meanwhile, Healey and Qvale had a falling out at the top level of the company, and the partnership came to an end.
Only about 11,000 of these classics for sale were produced during their four-year run. Qvale had initially hoped to sell that that many per year. The last cars were produced in 1976.
