The Kissel Motor Car Company manufactured automobiles as well as hearses, taxicabs and utility vehicles. Kissel classics for sale were of high quality as they were custom built.The company was founded in 1906 by Louis Kissel and his sons. They had begun by manufacturing agricultural equipment and stationary gas engines. The car company would join the Hartford Plow Company, the Kissel Manufacturing Company, and the Hartford Electric Company as the latest family business. At first they offered just a few models including a hearse and an ambulance. They soon also built trucks ranging from 1 ½ to 5 tons. Some of the bigger models had chain drive and names like Heavy Duty, Dreadnought and Goliath. The Kissels emphasized craftsmanship and were well-known around the world for their design and performance.
During World War I the company produced four wheel drive trucks and ambulances for the military and employed over 1,000 workers at their plant in Wisconsin.
Kissel continued to prosper after the war, and dropped the name Kissel Kars form these classics for sale. The most popular Kissel was the 1919 Speedster, also known as the Gold Bug. In 1927 Kissel produced the white Eagle Speedster. The company was also well-known for their stylish funeral coaches. They used an incredibly long and low chassis, detached fenders, spare tire covers and center-opening side doors which made easy access for caskets or gurneys. In the late 1920s Kissel coaches were distributed through the National Casket Company of Boston and branded as National-Kissels.
As the Great Depression began, Kissel faced stiff competition, and substantial losses. There was also a dispute about the automobile bodies supplied by the Eureka Company and used in National-Kissel coaches. Because of this, the National Casket Company ended their distribution of these coaches, which ultimately forced Kissel out of business.
The last classics for sale produced by Kissel were a small number of Ruxtons in 1931. After that the company focused on producing marine engines for Sears. Kissel had used Mercury for its logo and permission was given to allow Ford to use it for their Mercury brand in the 1930s. The company was sold to the West Bend Aluminum Company in 1942.
Actor Fatty Arbuckle and Amelia Earhart were said to own Kissel speedsters. About 35,000 Kissel classics for sale were produced. Very few of these still exist, and they are sought-after collectibles.
