Lanchester for sale
Lanchester classics for sale were the first four-wheel, gas-driven British motor cars. Lanchester vehicles were manufactured in England from 1895 until 1955. The Lanchester Motor Company was founded by three of the eight Lanchester brothers. Their first car was designed with six seats and proved to be too much for the single-cylinder engine in road tests. The next version had a two-cylinder engine, and by 1899 one had been driven from Brimingham to London.Production began in 1900, when six cars were built with two-cylinder, air-cooled engines and a tiller, rather than a wheel, for steering. The driver sat behind the front axle. The next year, Lanchester classics for sale became available for public purchase. A rudimentary set of mechanical disc brakes were outfitted on the front wheels. These early Lanchesters featured cylinders on opposite sides of the engine, connected by rods and teeth which made for a softer ride than had been previously achieved. However, the automotive industry had already taken up the traditional engine configuration, and this engine setup never caught on with other manufacturers.
By 1904, Lanchester classics for sale featured four-cylinder, water-cooled engines. The company soon offered a six-cylinder version. A standard steering wheel and pedals came within the next few years. The Napier model appealed to conservative British tastes and offered something elegant for a reasonable price.
During World War I, the Lanchester company built armored cars. They were the first company to export cars with left-side steering, in 1921. Throughout the 1920s, Lanchester classics for sale enjoyed a reputation for reliability and innovation. They were also more expensive than a Rolls Royce. The cars were used by King George V and VI, and favored by Indian Maharajahs who outfitted their Lanchesters with seats for servants and gold-plated trim. Demand for such expensive vehicles quickly dried up when the Great Depression hit.
The company was taken over by the BSA Group and Daimler in 1933. The Lancaster brothers stayed involved with the company, but once they began sharing components with Daimler and BSA, the cars no longer stood out. After World War II, the company concentrated on smaller models. After 1954, few Lanchesters were produced. The last model produced was the Sprite, in 1955. The Lanchester name was transferred first to Jaguar, in 1960, to Ford in the 1980s, and currently belongs to Tata Motors of India. Today Lanchester classics for sale are highly sought-after collector’s items.
