Vincenzo Lancia and his partner, Claudio Fogolin, were technicians and test drivers for Fiat who founded the company in Italy in 1906.The first Lancia to be introduced was the Alpha, in 1908. The DiLambda was built on a separate chassis. This was to allow customer to buy a chassis and order specialized bodywork, a common practice at the time. The company hit financial troubles and their high standards of productin became unsustainable. The brand was taken over by Fiat in 1969. The Flavia continued to be built until 1974. Fiat preserved the image of the brand and continued to produce new models including the futuristic Stratos. The Lancia Stratos competed in racing championships, winning the Monte Carlo Rally three times. With just 200 horsepower, it was a light car that handled well. It was outfitted with a Ferrari V6 engine.
While few originals were produced, replicas are not hard to find in Europe. Depending on their condition and race history, Lancia classics for sale can be worth up to $200,000. Other Lancia models, including the Ypsilon, Musa, and Delta, continue to be built.
