Land Rover for sale

The first Land Rover classics for sale were introduced in 1948. Because of post-war rationing and a tight budget, the first Land Rover was made from aluminum rather than steel, and the green paint came from a fighter plane factory. It was developed as a way for the Rover Company to find a valuable new export market and keep their factory in production.

The Land Rover was developed as a multi-purpose vehicle. They were inspired by the Jeep and the first prototype was built on a Jeep chassis. It was officially launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show. Originally designed for farm and light industrial use, it could carry extremely heavy loads and was equipped with four-wheel drive. Land Rovers were used in expeditions in the far corners of the world. Land Rover was an early supporter of the Royal Geographic Society. The original four by four classics for sale are known as Series I, II, and III. The Series III are the most common of these vehicles.

On early vehicles a canvas hood, seats, and doors were considered optional “extras.” Some buyers wanted something more than a utility vehicle, and the “Station Wagon” body option was offered in 1949. This version came with leather seats, a heater, windshield, and interior trim. Because their wooden frame was expensive to build, few of these were sold. Today these models are highly sought-after classics for sale.

In the 1950s, Land Rover improved upon this idea, creating a vehicle with Land Rover ruggedness and Rover luxury. With the growing popularity of sport utility vehicles like the Ford Bronco and the Scout in the 1960s, a model was produced with a Buick engine to give better on-road performance.

Land Rovers have also been used by the British Army, outfitted with blackout lights, heavy duty suspension, 24-volt electronics, and mounts for special equipment and weapons. British special operations forces used a fleet painted pink for desert use and nicknamed “Pink Panther.”

The Range Rover Classic model was available from 1970 to 1996. The Land Rover Defender classics for sale were styled by a blacksmith and came with a granite chassis. The body was made of aluminum panels over a steel frame. The vehicle could go anywhere. However, unable to meet United States regulations, it was discontinued there in 1997. It could climb rocks and cross swamps, but the gas mileage was horrible.

Land Rover was purchased by Ford and eventually sold, along with Jaguar, to Tata Motors. The company estimates that about two-thirds of all Land Rovers are still in use, many in very extreme conditions. These classics for sale are still being produced. Current models include the Defender, Discovery, Freelander, and Range Rover.
