Lincoln for sale

Lincoln classics for sale were once one of America’s most desired luxury brands. Henry Leland founded the Lincoln Motor Company in Detroit in 1917 to manufacture aircraft engines for World War I. After the war, the factories began producing cars. Leland had previously founded Cadillac and sold it to General Motors.

Lincoln classics for sale targeted the higher end market, and competed with Cadillac and Packard, the leading luxury brands at the time. The company ran into financial problems and was purchased by Ford in 1922. Ford had enjoyed hug success with their economical, mass-produced Model T’s, and this gave them a chance to get involved in the higher end market. Ford wanted to imitate the success that General Motors was having with its tiered brands.

The Town Car was originally built for personal use by Henry Ford himself. In the 1920s and 1930s, they competed with Duesenbergs, and were similarly built by hand. The brand was known for its comfort and luxury.

In 1936, the successful Lincoln Zephyr was produced. The Continental was next to be developed from the Zephyr platform. The original Continental classics for sale hit a high point in the 1940s. It came as a coupe or convertible, with a V12 engine, and the signature spare tire on the back of the car. In 1949, the Continental was branded as the Mark Series, and more expensive than ever. It went through eight generations. In the 1960s it was available as a four-door convertible. The design was originally sketched for a Thunderbird, and the sleek contours would influence other models for years to come. It also featured “suicide doors” which were subject to flying open at high speeds. The Town Car, for some time the most expensive version of the Continental, became a model itself in 1981.

Lincoln continues to be a successful brand, due in large part to their Navigator sport utility vehicle. The Continental and Town Car have been modernized as well. The brand still competes with Cadillac, as well as Mercedes, Lexus, and BMW.

Over the years, since Franklin Roosevelt was in office, Lincoln has been the primary provider of presidential cars. After John F. Kennedy was assassinated, these cars were outfitted with armor plating. Thomas Edison and W.C. Fields also owned Lincoln classics for sale.

A properly restored, operational Lincoln Continental classic for sale is worth about $50,000. More rare models, like the KB, are worth much more, depending on the body style.
