Locomobile for sale

Locomobile classics for sale were expensive and elegant automobiles manufactured in the United States in the 1900s. The company was founded by Andrew Riker and Samuel Davis in Massachusetts. Davis got involved when his father-in-law bought shares in a steam car company. At first the steam cars were popular with people like doctors and salesmen who needed quick mobility, but they were unreliable. With sales dwindling, Davis took over and began to develop a gas-powered motor car. Riker was an engineer who had patented a two-cylinder gas engine by the age of 18, and had his own Electric Motor Company. By the 1900s, sales of electric cars as well were on the decline. Davis offered Riker a position with Locomobile to develop his vision.

In just under a year, the first 12-horsepower, four-cylinder Model C was sold. The Model 48 classics for sale had six cylinders and weighed three tons. At about $8,000, only the very wealthy could afford one – magnates like Carnegie, Vanderbilt and Wanamaker. Early models had chain drives and right-side steering.

By 1908, a 120-horsepower engine was developed to compete in the international Vanderbilt Cup race. The American car beat Fiat and Mercedes.

Locomobile’s primary competitors were Pierce-Arrow, Peerless, and Packard. Locomobile was the most expensive. Many of these classics for sale had limousine bodies and required chauffers. Their slogan was “Best Built Car in America.” Mechanics built the cars to order and stamped their initials to the engines.

Riker trucks were also becoming a big business and many were sold to England for the war effort. Locomobile was quite profitable throughout the war. After the war, the company had anticipated strong demand, but with the threat of a recession, orders were being cancelled and they could not meet the expenses they had incurred for materials and supplies. The Locomobile Company sold shares and was eventually purchased by Durant Motors. The Model 48 continued to be sold until 1924. Durant’s idea was to create a more modest car to compete with Chrysler and Chevrolet. The Model 90 classics for sale took its place in 1925. It featured a six-cylinder engine with 86 horsepower and cost over $5,000. Only a few were sold, and these are highly sought-after classics for sale.

After the stock market crash in 1929, the Locomobile company shut its doors for good. Today Locomobile classics for sale are valuable and collectible. Many are historic examples that sit in museums. Others have been rebuilt for use on group tours. A Locomobile appeared in the novel This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
