Maserati classics for sale began as a family affair. The Maserati family was well-versed in the automobile industry: five of their eight sons were automotive engineers, designers, or builders. The spent years working at Isotta Fraschini. Alfieri Maserati opened his own office in Bologna, and raced Diattos.In 1926 the Tipo 26, the first Maserati, came out. Maserati continued to produce record-setting races throughout the 1930s, including the 16-cylinder 1929 V4. The last car designed by Alfieri before he died was the 1931 8C 2500.
The company hit troubled times during the Depression and sold their shares. Production was suspended during World War II while the company produced tools, spark plugs, and electric vehicles for the war. After the war, the company returned to building race cars. The first post-war model was the A6 1500.
The GranTurismo was the company’s first car built for the road, rather than for racing. It was designed by Panin Farina and launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1947.
In 1957, Maserati won the World Title for the fifth time. After that the company left the racing scene to others. They continued to produce cars for private teams and supplied engine to other companies such as Cooper.
Throughout the 1960s, the company built cars like the 3500 GT and the Quattroporte, the company’s first four-door sedan. The Ghibi was considered one of the most beautiful sports cars of its time. It came with a 340 horsepower, 4.9 liter quad-cam V8 and was available at first only in five-speed manual transmission. The structure underneath, particularly the axles, were similar to the Mustang, but these classics for sale cost five times as much. In 1968, they were bought by Citroen.
With the advances available from Citroen, Maserati was able to catch up with other sports car manufacturers to produce a mid-engine car. Maserati did well before the gas crisis in the 1970s. The Bora, Merak, and Khamsin cars became famous, but they soon faced trouble. With help from race car driver Alejandro De Tomaso and the Benelli company, the Kyalami was launched n 1976.
The lower priced Biturbo classics for sale were launched in the 1980s. In the 1990s, Maserati was bought first by Fiat and then by Ferrari, and eventually returned to Fiat to join Alf Romeo.
Today, about 2,000 Maseratis are produced each year. This is a lot for Maserati, but still makes these classics for sale not your everyday car. Depending on the model and condition, Maserati classics for sale can be worth over $100,000.
