McFarlan for sale
Like many automobile companies at the turn of the 20th century, McFarlan Motor Corporation had its roots in the horse carriage business. English immigrant John B. McFarlan started his carriage business in 1856. It was his grandson Harry McFarlan who had the idea for the McFarland motor car and produced his first automobile in 1909.Most of the cars of the era were propelled by a V-4 engine, but McFlarlan made the V-6 standard in his vehicles. They were also usually equipped with lights, fenders and a fold top. Quickly, McFarlans became known for quality and luxury. They also were noted for speed, especially after a pair of McFarlans finished among the top cars in the Indianapolis Labor Day races of 1910. They also faired well in the Indianapolis 500 races of 1911 and 1912.
In 1921, McFarlan introduced its own engine design, the Twin-Valve Six, which produced about 120 horsepower. This engine would remain standard for the rest of the McFarlan production years.
McFarlans were known as a luxury vehicle for the rich and famous and it is no wonder why. At the 1923 Chicago Auto Show, Harry McFarlan displayed a gold-plated Knickerbocker Cabriolet. Everything that was normally coated in nickel was coated in either 20k or 24k gold. After that, the McFarlan was often referred to as the "American Rolls-Royce. Many celebrities of the day, including Al Capone and Jack Dempsey owned McFarlans.
On the other side of luxury was practicality. Harry McFarlan also built up a business selling fire trucks, ambulances, funeral cars and highway department trucks. Strangely, however, he never built and police vehicles.
Production stopped in 1928, the year McFarlan Motor Corporation went bankrupt. The company was eventually bought out by the Cord Corporation and went on to supply bodies for Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg.
In all, only some 278 cars were built by McFarlan. Less than 20 are known to still exist and some of those can be seen in museums across the U.S. in Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Reno, Nevada.
