McLaren for sale

McLaren classics for sale were racing cars that dominated Canadian American Challenge Cup, or Can-Am, in the 1960s. Bruce McLaren, a race car driver, founded the Formula One team in 1963. He was dissatisfied with the decision made by his employer about what type of engine to use in the Australasion Tasman Series race. He and teammate Timmy Mayer would use custom-built Cooper cars. Mayer died in practice but McLaren won the 1964 series. After the accident, Mayer’s brother Teddy stepped in to help run the team.

In 1966 the team entered the Monaco Grand Prix race with the M2B car. Designed by Robin Herd, it used a Ford engine that was underpowered and ended the race with an oil leak. The next year a British Motors 2.1 liter V8 was used in the M4B, and later, the slightly larger M5A used a V12 engine. In 189668, the Herd-designed M7A classic for sale used Cosworth’s DFV engine. The McLaren team would stick with this engine until the 1980s. The team did very well with this configuration, winning several trophies and the Belgian Grand Prix championship.

Bruce McLaren died in an accident in 1970. He had been testing the M8D Can-Am car. After this death, Teddy Mayer took over the team. Mark Donohue and Johnny Rutherford drove McLaren-constructed cars to wins at the Indianapolis 500 several times in the 1970s.

The McLaren M23 classic for sale was designed by Gordon Coppuck in 1973, and it was used for four years. It was replaced by the M26 in 1977. The McLaren MP4 was inspired by the carbon fiber rear wings of the BMW M1 race car. The chassis was constructed from carbon fiber rather than aluminum alloy. It was introduced in 1981.

In the 1980s, other teams including Renault and Ferrari had switched from the 3.0 liter naturally aspirated engine to 1.5 liter turbocharged engines, and the McLaren team went about developing one of their own, the MP4 classic for sale.

McLaren Automotive is the sister company of the racing team. In 1994, the F1, designed by George Murray, debuted with a specially prepared, naturally aspirated V12 engine. The body was entirely made of carbon fiber and the driver sat centrally in the front of the car, with two seats in the back. Gold foil is used to reflect heat from the engine to protect the carbon fiber body. Only 106 of these cars were built, 64 of which were road cars. Though intended to be a road car, the race version took first place at LeMans in 1995. The last three of these cars were built in 1997 and are extremely rare. McLaren classics for sale are worth over $1 million today.
