Mercury for sale

Mercury classics for sale were first developed by the Ford Motor Company in 1939. It was intended, rather than acquired, as a mid-level brand in the Ford lineup. Ford had the high-end brand Lincoln, and was looking to emulate General Motors’s successful tiered system of brands. Mercury would sit between Ford and Lincoln, and was meant to rival Oldsmobile, Buick, and Chrysler.

The first Mercury classic for sale to be produced was the Mercury Eight, with 95 horsepower. This was about ten more than what Ford offered in its standard V8.

Mercury classics for sale gained status in the 1960s when the Comet and meteor models were introduced. The company brought the marque closer to Lincoln than to Ford by creating the Lincoln-Mercury Division. This positioned it as a “junior Lincoln,” rather than an upscale Ford. The cars offered performance and amenities at a reasonable price.

The Mercury Cougar was a version of the Mustang built on the same platform. Later versions shared a platform with the Thunderbird. The Mercury version was intended to have a more European flair than the Ford cars. Though considered a true muscle car, the Cougar was slightly more fashionable. Mercury Cougar classics for sale were manufactured from 1967 until 2002.

The Mercury Marquis was produced from 1967 to 1986 and served as Mercury’s flagship and counterpart to the Ford LTD. It was later replaced by the Mercury Sable as Ford moved towards producing front wheel drive cars. The Sable was a counterpart to the Ford Taurus.

Sales increased dramatically throughout the 1970s and 1980s, despite the oil crisis that was hitting other brands especially hard. When the American public turned to smaller cars, Mercury offered the Capri, Bobcat, and Lynx classics for sale. Mercury has entered various new market segments since then. These include the Mercury Villager minivan and the Mercury Mountaineer, one of the first sport utility vehicles to incorporate luxury details.

While Mercury shared many platforms and components with Ford, Mercury classics for sale were generally considered “cooler” than Ford. In fact, James Dean’s character drove a 1949 Mercury in the film Rebel Without a Cause. A 1949 Mercury convertible also served as the Batmobile in the Batman television series.

Ford has recently decided to stop production of the Mercury brand and introduce new Lincoln models to satisfy demand. Mercury classics for sale are typically worth up to $50,000 if in good condition.
