Monarch for sale
Mercury Monarch classics for sale were sold by the Lincoln-Mercury division of the Ford motor Company from 1975 to 1980. Ford had intended to develop a car similar to the Maverick and Comet models. The energy crisis of the 1970s called for a change of plans. Demand for compact cars was greater than ever. The Monarch was more luxurious than usual for a compact vehicle. They came as a two-door coupe or a four-door sedan, and were considered the first American-produced small luxury cars. The Monarch’s counterpart in the Ford lineup was the Granada. Granada classics for sale were produced until 1982, and were considered by Ford to be a rival to the Mercedes-Benz 280, a similarly-sized luxury vehicle of the time. Though it was intended as a successor to the Ford Maverick, the Maverick continued until 1977. It was later replaced by the Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr classics for sale.
The Mercury Monarch and the Ford Granada were practically identical except for each brand’s signature grille, some lights and trim. Ford’s inline six-cylinder engine was used in both vehicles. The cars also shared the Maverick/Comet four-door platform. It was offered with a manual or automatic transmission. The cars were restyled in 1978 with rectangular headlamps, revised taillights, and more aerodynamic mirrors. Over half a million Monarchs were produced before being replaced by the Cougar.
In 1975 and 1976, Mercury offered an upscale version of the Monarch called the Mercury Grand Monarch Ghia. Luxury features such as leather trim and steering wheel, a vinyl roof, power steering, visor vanity mirors, aluminum spoke wheels, whitewall tires, reclining bucket seats, plush carpeting, and soundproofing came standard. These classics for sale were also equipped with four-wheel disc brakes and a central hydraulic power system. It is said that several of Ford’s top executives favored this car for their personal transportation. The Ford counterpart to the Mercury Grand Monarch Ghia was the Granada Sports Coupe, which offered upscale trim and different color selections.
The Lincoln Versailles classics for sale were also based on the Monarch platform and shared many of the luxury features of the Mercury Grand Monarch Ghia, but although it had been “dolled up” with Continental signatures, it was considered too close to the Ford Granada to be successful as a Lincoln.
These classics for sale were considered reliable and practical luxury vehicles during the energy crisis of their time. The Monarch name was also used by Ford of Canada in the 1940s and 1950s.
