Packard for sale

Packard classics for sale were American luxury vehicles sold from 1899 until 1958. The company was started when James Packard was dissatisfied with his Winton car. Packard automobiles were first manufactured by the Ohio Automobile Company. A single-cylinder engine was used until 1903.

The Packard classics for sale quickly gained an excellent reputation, and achieved innovations in design like one of the first modern steering wheels, and a V12 engine (or twin six). Packards were some of the most expensive vehicles of their time, at four times the price of an Oldsmobile. Not surprisingly, they became popular with the very wealthy.

Through the 1930s, Packards competed with the Peerless and Pierce-Arrow classics for sale, known as the “three Ps” of American luxury vehicles. The Packard Eight Series were the signature classics for sale of this period. Packard may not have had the resources of the bigger companies like General Motors and Ford, but they were in a better position than other independent brands. They were able to survive the Depression while Duesenberg and Pierce-Arrow did not. Costs were kept down with a single production line, and to counter the Depression, the Packard 120 model was offered for less than $1,000. These were created at a separate factory and known as Junior models. While the strategy worked it also may have downgraded the image of the more expensive Packard models.

After World War II, Packards shared even more similar styling, and the luxury brand became diluted. The Clipper, designed as something completely new before the war, never got a chance to succeed. By the time the war ended it felt stodgy, but rather than redsigned, it was merely updated. The Kaiser-Frazer and Studebaker brands were putting out new body styles and Packard was pressured to do the same. The Clipper later became a separate model, and designs were modernized, but there were reliability problems in the 1950s. Also during this time, Packard merged with Studebaker. In 1958 models were launched without a series name, just Packard. However, some took to calling them Packardbakers. The company was one of the first to use plastic parts. To keep up their image, Packard built concept cars. The Caribbean, styled by Dick Teague, was glamorous, but could not bring the brand back.

The Packard name was dropped in 1962. The company wanted to move forward with new models. Today these classics for sale are worth up to $60,000.
