Peerless for sale
Peerless classics for sale were manufactured in Cleveland beginning in 1900. The Peerless Company had gotten their start building clothes wringers and bicycles and eventually used their knowledge to build innovative automobiles. In the early days they were licensed by a French company to produce what were known as “DeDion-Bouton machines.” They competed with Packard and Pierce-Arrow.Peerless was the first American carmaker to put the engine in the front of the vehicle, powering the rear wheels through a solid driveshaft. This design became standard in most automobiles produced in the United States throughout the twentieth century.
Louis Mooers designed the first completely original Peerless in 1902, and his designs performed successfully in races. Barney Oldfield, a famous race car driver, was commissioned to market the company and their cars. He set a number of speed records in a car nicknamed the “Green Dragon.”
The company was known for their luxury vehicles that could cost up to $6,000 – a small fortune in 1905. The company merged with the General Vehicle Company of New York in 1915. The same year a V8 engine was introduced. Peerless was eventually one of the few companies to use a huge 16-valve engine. The bodies of their cars were constructed from aluminum.
At first Peerless was known as a luxury carmaker. Their slogan was “All that the name implies.” But the company began to stagnate by the 1920s. Peerless cars ran well, and customers would hold onto them for ten years or more. New luxury car buyers were more interested in LaSalle, Studebaker, and Packard. The market for Peerless’s traditionally large touring cars was limited. To counter this, Peerless entered the mainstream market. They also changed the tune of their tagline to “Now there’s a Peerless for everyone.” During these years, however, quality began to slip.
The Great Depression hit the Peerless company hard, and the last of these classics for sale were built in 1931. The last three of these classics for sale were built in 1932. The company went on the brew beer as Carling’s Black Label.
All Peerless models are considered collectibles. The Series 67, Series 69, and the Custom 8 models are some of the most highly desirable Peerless classics for sale.
The name Peerless was also used for a small number of British sports cars produced in the 1950s and 1960s. These appear to be unrelated to the American classics for sale.
