Peterbilt classics for sale are medium and heavy duty trucks. The company was founded by T.A. Peterman, an entrepreneur in the lumber business. He was having trouble getting logs from the forest to the lumber mill to manufacture plywood. At the time, logs were transported by river or steam tractor, and Peterman was seeking a more efficient method.In the 1900s, trucks were known as “motor wagons.” Their biggest competition was the railroad, which could move goods across country within then days. Even horses were reliable and cheap. At the time many more towns were served by rail stations, and roads were hardly paved. In fact, John MacAdam’s road surface technology literally paved the way for classics for sale.
World War I placed huge demands on railroads and trucks were needed to help move the huge volume of troops and supplies. Federal and state governments helped get roads in shape while truck manufacturers built the vehicles.
After the war, truck production continued to grow rapidly. Refrigerated cars and sleeper cabs were introduced, and long-haul trucking became more practical.
The Peterbilt company was founded in 1939, after Peterman acquired Fageol Motors, a truck manufacturer that had fallen on hard times during the Great Depression. He had been rebuilding surplus army trucks to use for his logging business. The first model of these classics for sale to be developed was the 260/360.
While some companies were producing a hundred trucks a day, Peterbilt focused on quality. About 100 trucks were produced per year. Peterbilt engineers went out among truckers to find out what they needed and wanted. During World War II, Peterbilt produced trucks for the government, and the company’s expertise grew. This would later be useful in the commercial marketplace.
The company produced their iron nose and narrow nose classics for sale in the 1950s and 1960s. The flagship cab over engine model was produced in 1959. The 346 is one of the rarest Peterbilt classics for sale, with only 10 ever made. These were intended for use as concrete mixers and dump trucks. A sloped fiberglass hood was incorporated into a later version. Peterbilt also manufactured coal trucks. The company experimented with aerodynamics and hood styles. Their sleeper cars were introduced in the 1960s and 1970s.
Peterbilt classics for sale were featured in the movie Transformers. Peterbilt headquarters are located in Denton, TX. The trucks are sold at 200 retailers throughout North America. The company remains committed to quality and service.
