Plymouth for sale

Plymouth classics for sale were begun as a way for Chrysler to enter the low-priced car market dominated by Chevrolet and Ford. Born in 1928, they could not have come at a better time.

The cars were based on the Maxwell models that Chrysler had acquired in the 1920s, and rebranded first as Chryslers, then as Plymouths. Beginning in 1930, Plymouths were sold by Chrysler, DeSoto and Dodge. Just in time for the Great Depression, the Plymouth marque helped the Chrysler corporation survive when many other car companies were facing financial ruin.

The DeLuxe coupe sold especially well and is often found in collections. The 1939 convertible coupe was touted as the first production convertible with a power folding top.

The Fury, introduced in the 1950s, was Plymouth’s top of the line vehicle, a stylish car that sold well through the 1980s. The Plymouth Valiant, in 1960, was intended for customers unconcerned with looks, performance, or thrills. It was a basic, reliable vehicle to get from Point A to Point B. They required little maintenance, and sold well through 1976, when it was replaced by the Volare classics for sale.

The Barracuda was a sporty two-door fastback coupe sold in the peak muscle car years of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1969 the Road Runner was introduced. Unlike other sports cars, these classics for sale were not too pricey at $3,000. They could reach 100 miles per hour. Chrysler expected to sell about 2,500 in their first year, but instead sold 45,000! The Plymouth Superbird was an updated Road Runner modeled after the Dodge Daytona Charger Daytona classics for sale.

From the late 1970s forward, most Plymouth vehicles were merely Chrysler, Dodge, or Mitsubishi models with a Plymouth brand. These classics for sale included the entry-level Neon and the sporty Laser. With so much overlap between marques, Plymouth was beginning to lose its identity. In the 1990s Chrysler tried to reposition Plymouth with a new logo and advertising campaign, but it just seemed to narrow the appeal.

The Plymouth Prowler was a retro hot rod sports car. The PT Cruiser was intended for Plymouth but became a Chrysler vehicle instead. The Plymouth name was dropped in 2001. There is wide variation in prices of Plymouth classics for sale. While a beat-up Valiant may cost just a few hundred dollars, a convertible Barracuda with a Hemi engine can be worth millions of dollars.
