Roamer for sale
Each year, thousands gather in the small community of Streator, Illinois for one of the biggest assemblages of classic antique cars around. The reason? Streator was the location of one of the factories that built the famous Roamer automobile of the early 20th century, a car known as "America's Smartest Car."In 1913, Albert C. Barley acquired the Streator Motor Car Company, which made an automobile called the Halladay. Barley reorganized Streator into the Barley Manufacturing Company and continued producing the Halladay, until 1916 when he sold the division to a group of businessmen who moved automobile production to Ohio.
Albert C. Barley then teamed up with New York auto dealer Cloyd Y. Kenworthy and custom car builder Karl H. Martin, who designed the Roamer. The three men formed the Barley Motor Company in 1916. Roamers were produced in Streator, Illinois in 1916 and 1917 and then Barley moved the Barley Motor Car Company to Kalamazoo, Michigan and began assembly there.
The Roamer resembled the Rolls-Royce, at least in terms of the front grill. It had a six-cylinder Rutenber engine but was offered with a more expensive four cylinder Rochester-Duesenberg engine. Over the years of production, prices ranged from just over $2,500 to just under $4,000, which made them in the more expensive price range for that time.
Barley made several different models of the Roamer, including the Roamer 6-45 and the Roamer 6-90 in 1917. Production peaked in 1923, when nearly 2,000 cars were made.
Barley succumbed to the faltering American economy and grip of the stock market crash and finally The Great Depression that defined the late 1920s through the early 1930s. Production of the Roamer slowed way down in 1929 and shortly after that the Barley Motor Car Company went out of business.
While the total number of Roamers built numbered somewhere around 5,000, very few are around today. In 2005, a 1919 Roamer sold at auction in Missouri for $36,570.
