If you are partial to the strong and silent type, you would have liked the cars made by Rochet-Schneider, an early French automaker based in Lyon. Its motto was, "strength, simplicity and silence." It had a reputation for cars that were well-built and reliable.In 1894, bicycle maker Edouard Rochet joined forces with Theophile Schneider, a wealthy industrialist, to begin making fuel-powered cars. Their first automobiles were single-cylinder models influenced by Benz and Peugeot. They helped define what is now known as the "brass era" of automobiles marked by brass details, patterned leather and handcrafted wood. The early cars were limited in number, with estimates that only 240 were built between 1895 and 1901.
At the Paris Salon in 1901, Rochet-Schneider unveiled new models of two- and four-cylinder cars, redesigned along the lines of the Mercedes. The cars were a hit, winning a Gold Medal and French President Loubet's comment declaring them the "finest in the Salon."
By 1904 or so, Rochet-Schneider was one of the top automakers in France. It began selling cars to Britain, but because the cars were limited in number and expensive, the company was not thriving financially. By 1907, Rochet-Schneider had entered liquidation and had changed hands a few times, but with no luck turning things around. Finally, Carburateurs Zenith entered into agreement with Rochet-Schneider and profitability was restored. A new range of cars was introduced, including a smaller 12-16, which remained in production until about 1927.
Automobile production ended, making way for the production of trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles in the 1930s, which proved to be the most lucrative move for Rochet-Schneider. The company was eventually bought out by Berliet, maker of locomotives and other commercial vehicles, following the Second World War.
