Stutz for sale

The Stutz Motor Company classic for sale has always been synonymous with luxury and fame. Frank Sinatra owned one. Lucille Ball owned one. And Elvis Presley owned several -- in fact, his most prized cars of the 1970s were said to be his Stutz Blackhawks. He purchased a Blackhawk III in 1974 for $20,000 that had a lavish red leather interior with 18-kt gold plated trim throughout.

Stutz actually started way back in 1911. Harry C. Stutz founded the Ideal Motor Company, based in Indianapolis, Indiana and initially built a car, the A Series Roadster, that finished 11th in the Indianapolis 500. He renamed the firm the Stutz Motor Company in 1912, and several years later sold it to Charles M. Schwab who brought in Frederick E. Moskowics of Daimler to run the company.

Under Moskowics, Stutz promoted the idea of "safety" classic for sale cars. Its models had features like safety glass, a low center of gravity so they handled better on the road, and a type of transmission called the "No-back," which held the car steadier on hills. Race cars also continued to be a focus for Stutz, and in 1927, a Stutz set the record for speed, averaging 68 mph over 24 hours.

During the early years, top Stutz classic for sale models included the Bearcat, a version of the original A Series Roadster that had an even sportier look, with 4-cylinders and a multi-valve engine system. A Stutz ad of 1912 referred to the Bearcat as "The Car that Made Good in a Day," referring to the 1911 Indianapolis 500 race finish. Other early classic for sale models included the 8-Cylinder and early Blackhawk, both high-end performance cars.

When the automobile market soured during the Great Depression, automakers were forced to offer vehicles that were more practical and affordable. Stutz could not respond quickly enough to the demand for cheaper vehicles and sales dropped, ultimately leading the company to end production in 1935.

That was round one for Stutz.

Innovative designer Virgil Exner, who led the "Forward Look" classic for sale design at Chrysler, revived the Stutz brand under the name Stutz Motor Car of America in 1968. His prototype of the new Blackhawk was unveiled in 1970. Built in Italy, it had luxurious features like leather seats and electric windows. Elvis Presley bought the first Blackhawk, which helped establish Stutz solidly as a luxury brand.

During the Stutz Motor Car Company's 25-year reign, it made expensive Blackhawk, Bearcat, Royale Limousine, IV Porte, and Victoria classic for sale models. Over the years, the Stutz market remained a niche market catering mostly to celebrities and the like, thus sales slowed. By 1995, the second incarnation of Stultz had only built about 617 classic for sale cars.
