Subaru for sale

Subaru is a leading Japanese automaker best known internationally for its popular Forester and Outback all-wheel drive station wagons. It is named after the Pleiades star cluster, which inspired the company's six-star logo and also refers to the six divisions that make up Fuji Heavy Industries, its parent company.

FHI was started by Chikuhei Nakajima in 1917. It was known then as The Aircraft Research Laboratory and then the Nakajima Aircraft Company, Ltd., which went on to become the primary maker of aircraft for Japan during World War II. But following Japan's defeat in the war and U.S. bombing of several of its production facilities, Nakajima stopped aircraft production. The company re-emerged as Fuji Sangyo and introduced a scooter called the Rabbit, which used engine parts leftover from the war.
Fuji Sangyo was reorganized into Fuji Heavy Industries in the 1950s.

The new conglomerate wanted to get into the automotive business from the get-go. In 1955, it began developing a car with the code name P-1, which was later named the Subaru 1500 after the Pleiades star cluster. Production was terminated due to funding and supply issues and in the end, only 20 vehicles were produced. The Subaru division of FHI went on to design and manufacture a number of vehicles, among them the 360 (1958), the Rex and Leone (1971), the BRAT (1978), the Legacy (1989), the Forester (1997), and the Tribeca (2005).

Subaru broke new technological ground in the automotive industry in several ways. In 1965, it was the first automaker to offer front wheel drive passenger cars in Japan. In 1972, it became the first automaker to offer four wheel drive passenger cars internationally. Subaru also has become known for its boxer-style engine, arranged horizontally for more stability, and its monocoque body construction, where the chassis and body are built as one unit. Boxer engines and monocoque body design both originated in aircraft design. The Subaru is now developing and testing electric and hybrid models, thought to be the future of automotive concepts.

Worldwide, Subaru employs more than 15,000 people worldwide, with nine manufacturing plants, including plants in the U.S. and Canada. The company boasts it is at the forefront of green business practices such as reducing emissions and making cars that are completely recyclable. The Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana was the first assembly plant to achieve zero landfill status, with absolute nothing from the plant going into the landfill. The same plant in 2006 was designated as "wildlife habitat" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
