Talbot-Lago for sale
Talbot-Lago was a mid-century manufacturer of sports and luxury automobiles based in Paris, France. It was formed following the collapse of the English-French magnate Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq in 1935.Anthony Lago was an Italian-born engineer who spent most of his life in France. He attended the Turin School of Engineering and was known as "Major" for his rank in the Italian army during World War I. After the war, he worked in the auto industry in London and ultimately France, where he assumed a role as assistant director at Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq, which was on the brink of financial collapse. Lago seized the opportunity to purchase the Suresnes factory in 1935.
Lago renamed the company Talbot-Lago and immediately began to refocus its efforts on manufacturing fast, lightweight luxury cars that could be adapted for competitive racing. His cars were alternately known as Talbot, Talbot-Lagos and Lago-Talbot and their performance and style are legendary.
Within a year, Lago and former Fiat engineer Walter Becchia had designed a new line of faster cars. The T-120 had a 3-liter engine, while the T-150 had a 4-liter engine that packed more than 100 hp. The larger engines also had a Wilson pre-selector gearbox which Tony Lago had helped develop a decade earlier.
Talbot-Lago race cars were a natural next step. The T 150C raced with success in the 1936 and 1937 seasons. Famed race car driver Rene Dreyfus raced briefly for Talbot-Lago and confessed years later that the 150-C SS was comparable to the Bugatti.
Over the years, Talbot-Lagos were often made to customers specific needs and usually fitted with high-quality and stylish coachwork. Figoni and Falaschi, based in Paris, was even paired with the Talbot-Lago creating a car in the T150-C-SS that was not just fast, but artistically pleasing, with graceful, flowing lines.
Talbot-Lago enjoyed several wins in the late 1930s at the French Sports Car Grand Prix, the Tourist Trophy races at Donnington Park and the Monte Carlo Rally. But later in the 30s Talbot-Lago struggled to compete with Mercedes-Benz and Auto-Union cars. But following WWII, Talbot-Lagos emerged as winners once again into the 1950s, winning at LeMans in 1950.
Talbot-Lago enjoyed a niche in the luxury sports car market for a number of years, but ultimately met its demise due largely poor economic times and severe restrictions put in place by the French government. Simca took over Talbot-Lago in 1959.
To this day, Talbot-Lago automobiles are very much in high demand by collectors and racing enthusiasts and see astronomical prices at classic car auctions. In 2010, a Talbot-Lago T-150 C sold for $4.6 million, while a T23 Talbot-Lago went for $2.8 million.
