Vauxhall for sale

For two decades, Vauxhall Motors Ltd. with its ubiquitous griffin emblem has been the number two best selling car brand in the United Kingdom, next to Ford Motors. This was also the case in 2010: the top selling car was the Ford Fiesta, while the second best seller was the Vauxhall Astra. Other best-sellers in the Vauxhall range include the Agila, Corsa, Insignia, Meriva and Zafira.

If it seems like Vauxhall has been around forever, it just about has. Alexander Wilson founded the company in London in 1857. It originally made pumps and marine engines, but switched to car production in 1903. The first car was a 5 hp model with two forward gears and no reverse. In the early years, Vauxhall was known for its sports cars, but after World War I its cars had a more mainstream appeal. One popular early Vauxhall car was the Vauxhall A-Type, designed by the legendary Laurence Pomeroy. It was known for speeds of up to 100 mph.

As was the case of so many car manufacturers of the day, Vauxhall helped with the war effort by making staff cars for the British forces during World War I, but after the war struggled to make a profit. It went looking for a financial partner and found one in the U.S. General Motors Corporation, which purchased Vauxhall in 1925 for $2.5 million.
GM maintains ownership of Vauxhall to this day.

Following the GM takeover, Vauxhall no longer made expensive sports cars, but turned instead to more affordable vehicles. One of the first models was the low-cost Vauxhall Cadet, which was known as the first British vehicle to feature a synchromesh gearbox, now standard on most vehicles. Sales flourished up until WWII, when production of cars was put on hold, while Vauxhall designed and manufactured Churchill tanks for the war effort.

Car production resumed after World War II with vehicles that had more mass appeal.
Vauxhall pledged more exports and the waiting lists were reportedly two to three years for the 6-cylinder Velox and 4-cylinder Wyvern. In the years that followed were the compact Viva (1963), the speedy Firenza (1971), and the most successful Vauxhall model of all time, the Cavalier (1975).

One interesting thing to note about Vauxhall is that its models roughly coincide with that of the German-based Opal, another GM subsidiary. Since the late 1970s with the Vauxhall Chevette, Vauxhall has basically offered modified versions of Opel cars. This is widely known in the industry as the "Opelization" of Vauxhall.

Vauxhall's latest model is the Zafira Tourer Concept, an updated model of the Zafira compact family car. It is set to be released in the U.K. in early 2012.
