Voisin for sale
Avions Voisin was an airplane and luxury automobile manufacturing company founded by aviation pioneer and manufacturer Gabriel Voisin in 1905.Voisin is, in fact, recognized in French aviation history books. His plane, the Voisin 3, is credited as being the first armed airplane to down a German Aviatik B.1 in World War II. His also were the first all-metal airplanes. But for Voisin, his innovations would not stop there; even before the war ended, he was already tooling up his factory in Paris to begin manufacturing automobiles that were radically different, with an aerodynamic design.
In 1923, Voisin planned to enter one of his vehicles, a small six-cylinder, in the Touring Car Grand Prix of France. He was told, however, that his streamlined design would not be allowed in. Fueled by a fiery temper, Voisin decided to take his car and enter it instead in the Formula Grand Prix, which was exclusively for race cars. Remarkably, within just six months, he designed a car that was revolutionary in design.
The Laboratoire, as it was called, incorporated aerodynamic design. It weighed only 84 pounds and was made of ash covered in aluminum. This all-in-one chassis design is known as a monocoque automobile body, something that is standard on cars today. Prior to that, bodies were often installed in separate pieces. Voisin's car ended up placing fifth overall in the race.
Avions-Voisin produced a number of cars, including the C-1, C-3 and C-4. The four-cylinder C-4 beat the Orient Express from Paris to Milan, while the six-cylinder C-11 became the best selling of all Voisin cars. Also, Avions-Voisin vehicles stood waiting for presidential use at the Elysees Palace in Paris, while kings and presidents of foreign nations claimed to be on the list of owners of Avions-Voisin. Voisin had set the standard in the worldwide market with its luxury automobile featuring a stylized winged hood ornament.
But all that changed dramatically with the onset of World War II. The appetite for expensive sports cars fell to an extreme low and in 1939, the Voisin factory had to cease production. In all, some 10,000 Avions-Voisin automobiles were made; only 200 are known to exist today. At last report, the Portuguese Design Studio, LusoMotors is trying to revive the name and the luxury sports car product.
Today, practically any model of Avions-Voisin fetches a pretty price at auction. In 2010, a Voisin C-20 Mylord sold for $2.7 million. It was described as, "One of the most enigmatic, thought-provoking and awe-inspiring automobiles ever made."
