Whippet for sale

While the English and Japanese take credit for being the first to build the classic for sale compact car, the American market can lay claim to the Whippet, a small automobile that had a short but successful run leading up to the Great Depression.

The Whippet classic for sale was introduced in 1926 by the Willys-Overland Company of Toledo, Ohio to replace the Overland, which had experienced lackluster sales in the lower priced market. Originally manufactured with some of the Overland parts, the Whippet was advertised to be America's smallest car, named after a small, but swift, dog. It had a wheel base of only 100 inches -- slightly bigger than a Model T Ford -- and a 30 hp 4-cylinder engine. Unlike the comparable Fords, it also offered four-wheel brakes, water pump cooling and a pressurized lubrication system.

The Whippet classic for sale caught on right away. It was compact, stylish and affordable, starting at just $525. By some estimates, some 14 million people visited Willys-Overland showrooms in the first three weeks of sales. Production skyrocketed to 110,000 in the first year and by the following year the Whippet classic for sale was the third best selling car in the United States, behind Ford and Chevrolet.

Willys-Overland was also a forerunner in the automotive exporting business. At its plant in Canada, the company manufactured right hand drive Whippets to be sold in Australia and New Zealand. At the time of peak sales, Willys-Overland was selling cars in 37 countries.

Special features on the Whippet classic for sale included a push-button located at the center of the driving wheel that sounded the horn and switched on the lights. Electric windows were offered on some of the convertible models. Willys-Overland even introduced an even more powerful six-cylinder Whippet, which broke the record for speed, averaging 56 mph in a day-long endurance race.

Whippets continued to do very well for Willys-Overland. It sold 315,000 in 1928 and 242,000 in 1929, but like many companies of the time, Willys-Overland could not escape the devastating affects of the stock market crash in 1929 and the Great Depression that followed. Sales fell and Willys-Overland ended production of the Whippet classic for sale in 1931 and ceased production of all car models by 1933.

Willys-Overland was able to find a silver lining to the Depression years, however. The company was awarded a contract to build sturdy all wheel drive vehicles for the U.S. military in World War II. Those classic for sale vehicles became commonly known as the Jeep and were marketed to the public during the post-war period. Willys-Overland never returned to making classic for sale automobiles.
